FAQ
Daisy Dead Petals
Q. Why is your site called "Daisy Dead Petals?"
A. Daisy Dead Petals is a Tori Amos song from her 1994
Cornflake Girl [US] single, featured as track 3.
Q. What does "Daisy Dead Petals" mean?
A. The song "Daisy Dead Petals" is thought to be about a girl
who's been broken, started picking up the pieces of her
life, and brought along those scars as a reminder of how she
grew into the person she is today. The lyrics in the
chorus, "These dead petals, honey, brought me here," may
very well describe what the entire song is about, if not
down to a T.
Q. Why call your site "Daisy Dead Petals?"
A. I've come a long way in my life and what I love to do, and
everything that I am is inside those lyrics to this song. It
holds a very powerful message for me that I will carry with
me throughout my entire life and will remind me just how
I've grown into the person I am now and will someday become.
All of my successes, nay, my failures, have shaped me into
what I am now and will continue to improve on in due time.
My successes are a direct result of my failures.
Think of your own goals as daisy petals. For each failure,
that petal will die. Those dead petals, metaphorically
speaking, will shape you into the person you are now. I'm
not only speaking of goals, but also of conflicts and
problems throughout each and every one of our lives. "These
dead petals, honey, brought me here" is a declaration that
no - my successes didn't bring me, my failures have. My
failures shaped my successes. My failures shaped me.
Failures shape who you are, scars, bondage's, all these
things make you into the person you are now. You take those
failures and you learn from them, improve on them, and then
succeed with them. That's what Daisy Dead Petals is. This
site is me trying to improve my failures.
To understand that failing at things means you can only
improve and try harder and do better next time. Failing is
only human. This site is my testament that I will not let my
failures define me or successes restrict me. These failures
will only shape who I am and what I'm going to become -
successful.
Q. What exactly is your site about? You have lots of different
things in it!
A. This site of mine is called a digital portfolio - basically,
a collection of different things that doesn't fit under one
specific category. A collection, if you will. I used to
manage purely anime graphics sites, but since then, my
interests have changed and I wanted to expand my horizons
and do different things, and I learned that everything I
love can't go under one category - so I chose a
portfolio-type site instead, which is probably the most
flexible type of site I've yet to come by.
Contact
Q. How do I contact you?
A. If you wish to contact me, please use this form to
do so.
Q. Do you have any social networking sites like MySpace or
Facebook?
A. No and yes. My Facebook is private though, and I do not
accept friend requests from people I don't know. Although, I
do have a Twitter and it is public - here_inmyhead is
my Twitter username.
Q. Do you have any instant messaging addresses so I can talk to
you?
A. I do, but I'd rather not give them out. It's nothing
personal, but I am a relatively busy person and I can just
barely talk to my friends as is.
Q. I tried e-mailing you, but I haven't gotten a reply yet!
A. If you used my site e-mail (kyoko [at] daisydeadpetals [dot]
net), I do not check it very often and I'm sorry if I'm late
in responding to your message, I promise I will get to it as
soon as possible. If it's something
important and pertaining to the site, etc, you need to use
this contact form.
Linking Daisy Dead Petals
Q. I would really like to exchange links with your site! But
how do I do it?
A. Oh, that's very simple. If you wish to become a link
exchange, affiliate, or sibling, please use this form to
do so.
Q. What if I don't know what my site should be categorized under?
A. Even if you aren't sure just exactly where your site
belongs, I will go ahead and place you under the most
appropriate place possible.
Q. Now that I've applied - what's next?
A. The first thing you should do is add my link to your site,
using either a link, banner, or button by clicking here. Please
try to add my link within a week of getting my reply,
otherwise, I will remove your link from my site.
Q. What if I want to simply link your site without becoming a
link exchange, affiliate, or sibling?
A. Well, you are free to link my site if you wish. But I
strongly recommend that if you would like to gain traffic, I
suggest you swap links with me by applying for linkage.
Hosting
Q. Do you offer sub-domain web hosting?
A. Yes, I do.
Q. How do I apply for sub-domain web hosting?
A. If you wish to apply for hosting, please go to this page
in order to submit a form.
Q. How much space am I allowed to have?
A. It depends on what type of site you're applying for.
If you are wanting to apply for a graphics site, you are
looking at 250MB of web space.
If you are wanting to apply for a fan site, you are looking
at about 200MB of web space.
If you are wanting to apply for a blog, you'll get 50MB of
web space.
If you are wanting to apply for a portfolio, you're looking
at about 200MB of space.
If you are wanting to apply for a fan listing, you'll be
given about 20MB of space.
Q. Will I get an e-mail just for my site?
A. Yes, you will be given one e-mail with an inbox quota of 250MB.
i.e. yourname@daisydeadpetals.net
Q. Am I allowed to host MP3s?
A. If they are in stores and are able to be purchased, then no. If it's something
that is no longer available or was never officially released
or is your own work, then by all means, go ahead.
Q. Is my site allowed to have porn, illegal downloads, and
pirated software?
A. This is a big no my friend, and you will be instantly rejected or your site will be deleted.
Q. I got a response e-mail saying I have been rejected - why is
that?
A. If you've been rejected, there may be a number of reasons
behind this.
1. You did not fill out the form properly or provide enough
information.
2. You gave me an incorrect e-mail.
3. You are wanting to host content that is against the rules.
4. You requested more spaced than provided.
5. I feel that you do not have enough experience to handle
FTP, etc.
Q. If I start to run out of space, can I have more?
A. It depends. If you've been hosted by me for a long time and
I feel that I can trust you with that much space, then I may
raise your quota.
Q. Why did my site disappear?
A. If you're site disappeared, then you either:
a. Did not update for at least three months without
notifying anyone.
or
b. Broke a rule and I deleted your account without warning.
Q. Does all hosting packages come with extra goodies like
Coopermine, phpBB, or TikiWiki? If so, how do I add them?
A. Yes, it does. If you wish to add anything listed on this page,
please e-mail me at kyoko [at] daisydeadpetals [dot] net and
I will add it for you.
Q. Can I host just files and pictures with you?
A. No, you may not. If I find out that you are using your
account to host juts files and photos, I will delete it
without notice.
Q. What if I am having trouble with something regarding my site?
A. If it's technical trouble, I'm more than willing to help,
but if it's HTML/PHP errors caused by your own coding or
coding that you are using, then I may not be very useful. I
can try to point you into the direction of help, but I
highly doubt I can fix problems like that while I'm busy.
Q. Do I have to link back to your site?
A. I think that goes without saying. Ideally, I would like a
link be placed in your navigation bar, but if you want, you
can simply place my link in credits, but I would appreciate
it if you did link back to me. After all, I am hosting you,
right? :)
Q. What if I have future questions regarding my hosting?
A. If you have questions or concerns, then by all means,
contact me at kyoko [at] daisydeadpetals [dot] net and I
will try to answer your questions accordingly.
Q. I want to close my site or move - what do I do next?
A. If you are looking to close your site, then contact me and I
will delete it. If you are looking to move and want better
hosting, I will help you with that even. If you have any
questions, just contact me at kyoko [at] daisydeadpetals
[dot] net.
Graphics
Q. Can I use your graphics?
A. Of course you may! Although, it goes without saying that you
cannot claim them as your own, and please credit me
for anything you use somewhere in your site.
Q. Can I hotlink your graphics?
A. No, you may not, and apart from that, hot-linking is
disabled on my server, so all you will get is a big red 'x'
for an image. If you want to use my graphics elsewhere,
please upload them to Photobucket or Imageshack to use them.
Q. Can I modify your graphics and then claim them as my own?
A. No, you may not. Resizing is okay if it's necessary, but claiming them as your
own is not, and if I catch you, you will regret it.
Q. What if I catch someone stealing your graphics and not
crediting you, or even claiming them as their own?
A. This goes for anything of mine, but if you happen to see this, record the URL and take a
screenshot (Print Screen SysRq button near or above the
Insert button on your keyboard) the moment you see it and
send a form to
me. You will always remain anonymous.
Q. Can you teach me how to make graphics?
A. Unfortunately I cannot do that, but sometime in the future,
I may offer tutorials on some basic techniques to make graphics.
Q. What programs do you use?
A. I mainly use Adobe Photoshop CS4, but I will sometimes, but
rarely, use CS2 and Paint Shop Pro 7 & 9.
Q. Can you give me those programs?
A. The answer is no, that would be illegal. But, I hear that GIMP is a
good and free substitute for Photoshop.
Q. Can you teach me how to use GIMP?
A. I don't have the program so I really don't know how it works
and therefore unable to help you. I'm sure there are
tutorials that can help, such as this one.
Resources
Q. What are resources?
A. Resources are things that help you create something, such as
textures, brushes, or actions. They are used in graphic
programs to enhance images
Q. Can I use these resources?
A. Of course you may, as long as you give me credit somewhere
on your site and do not claim them as your own.
Q. Can I claim these resources as my own work?
A. You certainly may not and pray that I won't catch you, because
I will. And it won't end well for you.
Q. Can I manipulate any of these resources and then claim them
as my own?
A. No you may certainly not.
Q. What if I catch someone stealing your resources and not
crediting you, or even claiming them as their own?
A. This goes for anything of mine, but if you happen to see this, record the URL and take a
screenshot (Print Screen SysRq button near or above the
Insert button on your keyboard) the moment you see it and
send a form to
me. You will always remain anonymous.
Q. How do I use actions?
A. Actions are essentially macros, or in Layman's terms, a
recorded 'action' that took place on an image in a graphics
program that can be repeated by pressing the 'play' button.
If you downloaded an action and you don't know how to use
it, simply hit the arrow in the corner of the actions panel
and select "Load Action..." and all you have to do is hit play!
Q. What are brushes? How can I use them?
A. Brushes are simply graphics in brush strokes that can stamp
images onto a graphic you are working on that can create a
desirable effect of your choice. Think of it like a paint
brush, only the paint is an image. You can only load brushes
that were created in the program, and usually you cannot use
them on an older version of that program.
For example, you can't load a Photoshop brush into Paint
Shop Pro. But there is a simple thing called "Image Packs"
that you can download with my brushes where you can convert
images into brushes that work just as effectively as on the
program it was created from.
Q. How do Image Packs work?
A. Image Packs are essentially the image of a set of brushes in
.jpg or .png format. They come in handy, especially if you
have older versions of a program it's created in or a
different program, so that you are able to use them even in
those programs. In order for you to, let's say, convert
those images into brushes on Paint Shop Pro*, you would have
to save it as a brush (from my memory). If you aren't sure
how to do this, refer to the help instructions that came
with the program. Once you have the brushes saved, open them
up and all you have to do is load them and they are ready to go!
* Note: You can use these images on any program that creates
brushes, such as GIMP.
Q. What are textures?
A. Textures are simply texturized images that, when blended
into another image using a graphics program, create a
texturized effect on said image. Textures can also be used
on various other things, such as font or photos. Textures
are also one of the most popular forms used to make graphics.
Q. How do I use patterns?
A. In Photoshop, all you do is simply click on the pattern
stamp tool and then load the pattern, and start placing the
pattern on your image as if you were painting it on there.
If you do not have Photoshop or Photoshop CS4, you can download the image packs that I provided.
See the above question about how to use brushes, but instead of defining a brush, you have to define a pattern.
Q. What are PNGs?
A. PNG's (Portable Network Graphics) are images that have a
transparent background (usually in gray and white checkers)
in a graphics program. When used on the web or previewed in
Windows Explorer, etc, it appears to have a transparent
background. PNG's are useful when you don't want a
background in the way and only want the subject of that
image in focus, where you can easily manipulate the image's
background as you wish. PNG's are also great for blending
purposes as well.
Q. How do I install cursors?
A. In order to install a cursor on Windows XP, go to Start ->
Control Panel -> Appearance and Themes -> Mouse Pointers and
load the cursor you want and save it.
